The opera was set in 1950s Coney Island.

Apr/08/2014: Performance of Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, given by the Edmonton Opera company, from the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium, Edmonton. The performance featured soprano Anne Sophie Duprels (Cio-Cio-San), tenor Luciano Ganci (Pinkerton), mezzo-soprano Margaret Thompson (Suzuki), tenor John Kriter (Goro), baritone John Fanning (Sharpless), and soprano Catherine Daniel (Kate Pinkerton). The performance was conducted by Robert Tweten.
  • The performance was preceeded by an informative illustrated talk by Brianna Wells, describing the development of the opera and its performance history, and the social themes that it highlights.
Apr/05/2014: HD broadcast of La Bohème by Giacomo Puccini from the Metropolitan Opera, New York. The performance was conducted by Stefano Ranzani and featured tenor Vittorio Grigolo (Rodolfo), soprano Kristine Opolais (Mimi), soprano Susanna Phillips (Musetta), baritone Massimo Cavalletti (Marcello), bass-baritone Patrick Carfizzi (Schaunard), bass Oren Gradus (Colline), and baritone Donald Maxwell (Benoit and Alcindoro).
  • Kristine Opolais stepped in at literally the last minute to perform Mimi, after the scheduled performer, Anita Hartig, came down with 'flu. What made this especially impressive was that Opolais had sung the lead role in Madama Butterfly the night before.

The performance was conducted by Peter Dala.
  • Performance was preceded by an interesting illustrated Opera Talk by Dr Franz Szabo, setting the operetta into the context of Viennese society and explaining some of the subtleties of the text and music.

Jun/25/2013: Angelique Kidjo in concert in New York CityConcert by Angélique Kidjo on a hot sunny evening in Nelson A. Rockefeller Park, Manhattan, New York City. The free concert was part of the River to River Festival. Backed by a four-piece band, Kidjo sang in English, French, and Yoruba. She sang mostly songs that she had written. Energized by the lively and infectious Afropop music, the audience was on its feet dancing after the first few songs!

With the weather uncertain, we sat outside the fence for this concert, not far from the artillery, where we got the full audio benefit of the firing, as well as the drifting smoke and cordite smell! Yesterday's concert was moved indoors and the weather today was cool to distinctly chilly, only fitfully sunny, with strong blustery winds that attenuated the sound. Sitting outdoors for two-and-a-half hours required fortitude and warm socks! The program included:

    Halfway through the second movement, it began to rain. A brisk shower soaked the audience members in grass seating, although most stayed to the end of the performance. The rain had more or less stopped by the end of the concert, though the walk across the Park was soggy!

This broadcast was memorable for the continuous Pling! Plang! sounds of dripping water. The theatre roof was leaking after heavy rainfall, and runoff was dripping into a series of large plastic buckets throughout the performance.
