History of the Royal Alberta Museum
Aug 10 1628: The Swedish warship Wasa, the subject of an exhibition in 1983, sank just outside Stockholm harbour on her maiden voyage.
Mar 19 1864: Birth of artist Charles Marion Russell in St Louis, Missouri, USA. He painted one of the iconic objects in the Museum's collection, The Queen's War Hounds.
Mar 08 1913: Birth of artist Luke Lindoe, in Bashaw, Alberta. He was best known for his work in clay, as well as his paintings, but he also created several architectural artworks, including the Petroglyph Wall on the south side of the Museum building.
Aug 31 1913: Birth of artist Clarence Tillenius, in Sandridge, Manitoba. He was well known for his work on museum dioramas, including the Mountain Goat diorama in the Wild Alberta gallery.
May 29 1914: The passenger ship RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the St Lawrence River after a collision with another ship. More than 1,012 people died in the disaster. Some artifacts from the wreck became part of the Museum's collection in 2007.
Dec 02 1919: John Poikans, palaeontology technician and preparator at the Museum in the late 1960s, born in Liepna, Latvia.
Mar 28 1920: Birth of artist John Weaver, in Anaconda, Montana, USA. Well known for his sculptures in bronze, he created three large bronze artworks for the Museum lobby while working as the Museum's resident sculptor, 1966-1971.
Jan 02 1925: Maurice White, long-time museum volunteer, born in Coldwater, Ontario..
May 20 1925: Lawrence D. Halmrast born in Raymond, Alberta. In 1992, he donated a large firearms collection to the Provincial Museum of Alberta.

Jun 28 1956: Birth of Roxy Hastings, on staff at the museum 1989-2014 and Curator of Botany (1995-2014).
May 03 1962: As reported by The Edmonton Journal, the Provincial Secretary, A. R, Patrick. announced the appointment of Raymond O. Harrison as a provincial museum consultant, to advise on the development of the new institution.
Aug 22 1964: Bruce A. McCorquodale's appointment as Head Curator of Natural History for the "Alberta Museum" was announced by the Provincial Secretary, the Honourable Ambrose Holowach.
May 11 1965: Bruce McCorquodale, Head Curator of Natural History for the Provincial Museum of Alberta gives an illustrated lecture on the plans for the new building and displays to the Edmonton Natural History Club, at the Biological Sciences building on the University of Alberta campus.

The plate commemorates the travels of Viscount Milton and Dr. Cheadle, who were early adventure tourists in western Canada, and illustrates one of the scenes from their tour.
