If you have never seen this book, get hold of a copy and read it straight away. What sounds like a dry and dull topic turns out to be highly entertaining. The text contains much good advice, including how to select a good title, understanding the publication process, and the function of referees. It is also extremely funny, being illustrated by prize bloopers culled from Day's 30 years' experience as an editor in medical and biosciences. This book should be required reading, in particular for all graduate students trying to write theses or papers. As Day points out, communication is central to science and learning to do it well is an essential skill.
